John Gaeta, the Oscar-winning VFX architect behind bullet time, on how they pioneered the 3D/VFX techniques now powering game engines, spatial computing and AI world models.
I just spent two hours with John Gaeta, and he completely reframed how I see The Matrix. While audiences watched Neo dodge bullets, John’s team was solving a different problem: how do you capture and simulate reality? That question, and the techniques they invented to answer it, became the foundation for the game engines, virtual production tools, and AI filmmaking systems we use today.
These movies went beyond innovative VFX, it was advanced R&D disguised as entertainment. A literal 25-year roadmap for the AI and 3D tools we all use today.

Near the end of our conversation, John said something that stuck with me:
“The Matrix was a cautionary tale. We don’t want to end up being enslaved by these wondrous, remarkable, and occasionally potentially dangerous systems we’re inventing.”
They made a movie about AI simulating reality so convincingly that humans couldn’t tell the difference. Then the industry spent 25 years building the tools that make that simulation possible.
The question isn’t whether we’re building the Matrix. It’s whether we’re building it consciously, and who gets to shape it.
